Ford US extends, restructures $7.9 billion debt

Ford US announced today that it has reached an agreement with several of its lenders to extend US$7.2 billion in loan and credit payments by two more years while also indicating that it intends to pay off US$1.9 billion of its existing US$10.7 billion line of credit.

Ford US extends, restructures $7.9 billion debt

Additionally other lenders, which hold US$724 million of Ford debt, agreed to create a new term loan that will come due on December 15, 2013, bringing the total debt restructured, or extended to US$7.9 billion.

“We are very pleased with the results of the amendment, extension to our revolving credit facility and new term loan,” Ford US Vice President and Treasurer, Mr Neil Schloss, said. “We appreciate the support of our banking partners.”

Ford’s lenders also lowered the total amount of possible credit available to Ford by as much as 25 per cent after the move.

Breaking News: Ford, Geely come to terms with Volvo's Intellectual Property

As part of Ford’s renaissance, they have been cutting costs and pumping money into research and development (R&D).  It started in 2007, when current CEO Alan Mulally was hired.  He immediately leveraged part of Ford in order to get $4 billion in operating costs, which he then sunk into R&D to bring Ford’s car offerings up to par with their foreign rivals.

The fruits of those labors are coming to fruition, with Ford’s Fusion taking Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award for 2010, and many other Ford cars being received well by American consumers.  Another thing Mulally did was to begin selling off underperforming brands that Ford owned.  First, Aston Martin was sold to a British conglomerate, and then Land Rover and Jaguar were sold to Tata Motors, an Indian company.  Ford then sold its controlling interest in Mazda, and Volvo went up for sale.

Geely, a Chinese automaker, stepped up with a bid to buy Volvo.  The problem that has been plaguing the deal is intellectual property: Ford currently shares a lot of the hardware between its Volvo and Ford vehicles.  If Ford sells Volvo, the new owner would automatically have the underpinnings to a lot of Ford vehicles.  Negotiations have been going on between Ford and Geely for some time now, and this morning it was announced that they had come to an agreement for the intellectual property.

The agreement states that Geely will get any technology that is exclusive to Volvo, but anything shared with Ford will not transfer.  This protects Ford, while still giving Geely the base they need to continue production of Volvo vehicles.

What does this mean to us, as American consumers?  It gives Geely a way into the US auto market.  For some time now, Chinese automakers have been looking to sell their cars here, but have been unable to meet environmental and safety regulations.  I believe that our marketplace is already saturated and we really don’t need any more sellers.  Car sales in 2007 were over 13 million vehicles, but since then, sales have been declining.  Even with the Cash For Clunkers program, sales in 2009 are still not above 10 million.  I just don’t think that the market can sustain any more automakers than what are already here.  Also, the sale of Volvo is not good for Ford.  Even though Volvo sold 73,078 vehicles in the US in 2008, a fairly low number, the safety features and platforms that Volvo has been developing have made their way into Ford’s vehicles, the latter underpinning the Lincoln MKS and 2010 Ford Taurus.  While the Lincoln is a niche seller, the Taurus has been well-received so far, and should sell well.  I have a feeling that Ford will want whatever Volvo develops to succeed the Taurus’ platform, and selling them off will only make things more difficult.  As always, time will tell, but I hope that Ford isn’t making a mistake by selling Volvo.

Scrappage Success For Ford!

According to figures just released Ford have just sold their 30,000th scrappage vehicle – the vehicle in question, the good old Ford Transit!transit dealer essex

Ford have now sold 1,100 commercial vehicles through the scrappage scheme which has been a fantastic success for them.

Ford lead the scrappage sales in the UK with Vauxhall following closely behind.

The Ford Fiesta in particular has been particularly popular during the scheme – and sales of the Fiesta recently topped the 100,000 mark (both scrappage and non-scrappage sales).

Fitch on Autos

Got Fitch’s latest outlook on the auto industry.  Frankly it’s not that good.  I’m not sure what I can share/not share from the release, so I’ll try and hit the highlights here.  If you want more, you can always go to their site here and sign up for updates.

At any rate, they really tackle a couple of key, hard-hitting themes when it comes to the outlook.  First, was the forecast for 11.1 million in unit sales.  How does that compare to the historic average? Abysmal. Over the last 20 years, sales have averaged 15.7 million units (courtesy of Ward’s).

Which rolls right into the next big point – negative cash flow.  They didn’t discuss how they calculated that, but it’s safe to say they used a standard metric like free cash flow (FCF).  FCF is defined as the following:

There won’t be a lot of new CapEx (no new plants being built and most auto manufacturers are not under capacity, they’re over capacity), there will be some level of working capital expenditures, but what it’s going to boil down to is too little income to go around between all of the players.  The market is contracting.  Which is why the estimated $125Bn spent on TARP, TALF, cash-for-clunkers, and other government programs were a waste.  It was never going to stop the free-fall in net income for the industry, and it didn’t even stop GM from losing money and asking for more government money.  Ford probably got some benefit from suppliers staying in business via supplier guarantees & other forms of assistance, but Ford is on the mend without government aid.

Also, negative cash flow for Chrysler and GM means no capital market access so all of that talk of an IPO?  Total fail.

As for the companies that are left (i.e. the Japanese & Korean manufacturers), there will be a smaller market to fight for so there’s no more easy money to be made by grabbing more market share.  There may be a few more points left over to take from GM and Chrysler, but there won’t be much more.

The one other takeaway?  Unfunded pension liabilities.  The loss in the value of pension assets will make funding the future pension liabilities that much tougher.  And those liabilities continue to grow while the auto companies continue to conserve cash by reducing their contributions to the minimum amount allowed by law or contract.  It seems to me this an area the government could actually help by restructuring the liabilities of GM and Chrysler which in turn would give Ford the wiggle room it needs to restructure these liabilities.  Because these have the potential to bring the industry down.

Old timer bonanza

We’re on a bit of an old timer kick here- including vintage Opels,  German-market Fords, and other European “heavy metal” (by the way, how great is it that the term “old timer” is a legal definition in the Netherlands and Germany?). It’s hard not to be intrigued by these cars – and the culture behind them – when they’re unavailable to us and differ markedly from the domestic market and its, er, culture. The same could be said about the Fords and Holdens of the Australian market.

The ultimate irony, of course, is that the cars from abroad likely looked to and took their cues from the America of yore (cool America) for inspiration- and appear to continue to do so in the culture that lives on today, albeit with a distinctly European flair. And thus the circle becomes complete.

Rolls Royce Goes HD!

Saturday, it was announced that Rolls Royce would be joining Volvo in making HD radio a standard component across all its lines for 2010!  This comes quick on the heels of an announcement from Mercedes-Benz that HD will be in all its 2010 models that have “premium feature packages.” Looks like HD has locked on with the luxury car aficionados!

That is one heck of a brand association. Rolls Royce has been known for refinement and luxury since before World War II. It is a name that has stood the test of time and retained its noble bearing throughout. The Phantom, for example,  is to cars as a tuxedo-clad James Bond is to espionage (the Sean Connery Bond). To have HD radio become a standard firmly affixes the growing medium in the luxury market and the luxury mindset.

Here is the statement from iBiquity via Radio Ink:

“We are proud to confirm the availability of HD Radio technology for yet another prestigious brand — Rolls-Royce,” iBiquity COO Jeff Jury said. “The Rolls-Royce brand is revered. This commitment to HD Radio technology as standard illustrates how digital radio’s dynamic function enhances the in-car ambiance. The addition of Rolls-Royce to the HD Radio roster truly solidifies the technology’s stature in the luxury automotive class.”

Rolls Royce  joins an array of other car makers in offering HD either as a standard or an option: BMW, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes, Mini, Scion, Land Rover and Volvo. In addition, Audi, Ford, Kia, Lincoln and Mercury are soon to join their ranks and have committed to offering HD as well. Now that approximately 85% of the US is covered by HD signals, it looks like it could be a great time for a road trip!

It’s really fun watching a medium grow up. There are always growing pains, but the process always seems to yield fascinating results.  As each quarter slips by, we see more maturity in the HD radio platform. Not only are the high-end auto makers adding it in as a standard, but there is now a HD listening option for the iPhone. (See my earlier post.) The times are certainly changing, and as far as HD is concerned, changing for the better!

Safest Cars of 2010

Last Wednesday, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety awarded 27 vehicles for receiving the highest ratings for “safest vehicles for 2010”. All 27 vehicles received an award recognizing them for doing the best job against protecting motorists in front, rear, side and rollover crash. All vehicles feature, Electronic stability control (EST), which is a new state of the art anti-rollover technology.

With a new criterion, the numbers were cut in more than half. 94 were tested and approved in 2009, in comparison to the 24 this year.

Ford Motor Co. and its Volvo unit received the most awards with six, followed by five awards apiece for Japanese automaker Subaru and German automaker Volkswagen AG and its Audi unit. However, Subaru was the only manufacturer with an IIHS in all four vehicles classifications in which it completes.

“With the addition of our new roof strength evaluation, our crash test results now cover all four of the most common kinds of crashes,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund in a statement. “Consumers can use this list to zero in on the vehicles that are on the top rung for safety.”

Below is the IIHS list of vehicles given a top safety pick.

Ford Australia President optimisitic on 2010 sales figures

Ford Australia President Marin Burela is hopeful that the automotive industry will continue to fight back in 2010 with predictions of national sales up to 950,000.

The self-confessed “glass half-full” forecaster expects the sales to soften in the first quarter after a solid end to 2009 before a kick-up in the second quarter continuing through the rest of 2010.

“I would not at all be surprised if we start to see some 930s/940s (thousands of sales) on a regular basis when we get into the second quarter and into the second half of 2010,” he said.

His optimism comes on the back of strong October sales where Ford sold 8240 vehicles and the industry as a whole was up 2.2 per cent on October 2008 with 80,813 sales.

“We exceeded our expectations in terms of volume in the month of October.  I’m very confident that we will continue to see that trend in November, and I think the industry overall will probably finish up somewhere around that 920,000 maybe 930,000.

“We’ve seen a significant uplift in the last few months which is really helping all of the manufacturers as well as all of the employees.”

Burela says the result is a far cry from 12 months ago when figures of low-800s were feared, and believes that the combined efforts governments, unions, manufacturers and suppliers working together have had a great impact.

“When we really get focused on what it takes to get out there and move forward there’s a lot that can be achieved.

“It’s exciting times for us, but we need to be cautious in terms of our optimism because there’s a lot more work that we need to do to truly get the industry back to where it needs to be,” he said.

Tariff reductions – halved to 5 per cent from next year – are just one reason to exercise caution according to Burela.

He says while the reductions will place significantly more pressure on the industry’s ability to absorb changes, his company has not been sitting on its hands.

“We have been working very diligently across our total organisation, with our suppliers, with our manufacturing teams, with our distribution network to find efficiency opportunities to offset some of those tariff changes that we’re going to see.

“Am I satisfied that we have achieved the ultimate goal?  The answer is no, it’s very much a work in progress.  Am I happy with the progress we have been making?  The answer is yes.

“Although it’s hard and we could all say: ‘It’s too hard, we can’t do this’, I’m confident that with the right leadership and the right attention to detail we can continue to carve out a business for ourselves that will be viable.”

Burela said price adjustments for the Falcon and Territory are being considered but insisted that the movements of the market would most likely determine his company’s strategy.

With Falcon sales up 3.4 per cent on October 2008 and Territory rising by almost 11 per cent in the same period, Burela says Ford is looking to boost production above the current 270 cars per day by the end of the year.

He also confirmed that there is no non-production days planned for the rest of this year or for 2010, but stopped well short of implying that overtime could make a comeback.

“We don’t want to be too optimistic.  We’re in a good place right now, we’re selling everything we can make, our imported cars are doing great work for us.  We’ll make a decision in the next couple of weeks in terms of what we need to do, how we go out there and get those cars that we’re looking for.

“Let’s just see where we are when we move into 2010, but I think next year will be an exciting year.”

Volkswagen completa 50 anos no Brasil e anuncia novos investimentos

Ford's Capless Gastank - Remove Your Gas Cap...For Good.

Ford’s technology makes refueling easy and benefits the environment.  Ford was first to the market with the technology, installing it on the Ford GT supercar.

“The capless system is a tangible example of how Ford is developing innovative product solutions to satisfy the unmet needs of consumers,” says Mark Fields, executive vice president, Ford Motor Company, and president of the Americas for Ford.

The capless fuel system provides a much better seal than a cap, as it isn’t opened until the fuel pump nozzle is inserted. When capless fueling is completed, the nozzle is removed and the system seals shut automatically.

Capless fuel filler technology serves several purposes. It not only eliminates the inconvenience of forgetting to put the gas cap back on after fueling, but it also saves time during refueling by doing away with unscrewing and replacing a fuel filler cap.

The system could prove to benefit the environment as well. Inappropriately installed, broken or missing gas caps can allow emissions to escape. These vapors combine for a prime cause of smog.

The new system is simple and seamless to the customer and practically invisible, hiding behind the same fuel door found on today’s vehicles. It is also easily integrated into all Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles.

Why do we still have Unions?

Recently, here in Phoenix, local grocery chains Fry’s and Safeway had disputes with their respective unions. Supposedly no deal could be agreed upon and thousands of grocery workers went on strike this afternoon.

Now is it just me, or is this the WORST possible time in all of history to decide to go on strike?

Not only are you not working, but you’re protesting your wages and demanding higher pay, during a depression (or recession depending on who you ask). Do you really believe your jobs are going to be protected? Especially when both stores have secured over 6,000 temporary clerks? What harm could you possibly do to a company that has temporarily replaced you during your “strike”?

Which gets into the subject of unions. Regardless of what you may or may not have heard on CNN, the prime reason the largest automaker in the world collapsed and went bankrupt was because of unions. Yeah, maybe back in the 20’s unions were very much a positive thing. Without a degree in the field, I can say that they are probably the reason the standard of living was raised for many people and why so many people were able to make a living for many, many years. But these days, unions are only causing problems. They’re becoming more of a pest than an asset.

Going back to the UAW, talk about ruthless, good for nothing union leaders. Very few heard about it, because we have to support the unions in this country, you dare not oppose them, but their practices over the past many years has been dishonest and despicable.

First, most of the “engineers” that the UAW are protecting make $30+/hour, are salary, and work ZERO hours per week. That’s right, the UAW has made it so these men can sit at home, do nothing, and still get paid.

That’s not all. While they have secured high wages and rivaled benefits packages, they still pressure the automakers into more and more demands. Such demands these companies are forced to grant in fear of not only losing man hours, but because of the sheer power these unions hold over their heads.

And the fear was, “we can’t end the unions, that’ll end jobs and the automakers will all go bankrupt!” Oh, and, “we have to support the unions because they keep millions of Americans employed and we have to buy American built, not foreign!”

Well first of all BMW, Honda and Toyota are all union-less. Oh, and by the way, they also have plants across the country, so buying foreign is also supporting jobs held by Americans. As for Ford and GM, they both have plants in Canada, Mexico and China. So much for “American Built”.

This was meant to be a short rant about something local so sorry about the lack of links, but this is all verifiable, just by doing a search of the internet.

Guess I’m done for now.

The Changing Consumer Perception

India is poised to become a major Auto hub in the near future. Indian car industry is changing rapidly, so is the mindset of Indian Consumers. We, at the Great Lakes Institute of Management, took an initiative to find out that whether the changing ground realities have also changed the India Auto Consumer’s mindset vis-a-vis their perception of the abilities of various Indian and foreign Auto manufacture to deliver the much sought after attributes in a car. We deliberately, instead of taking individual cars, took BRANDS (as we wanted to analyse the brand perception mapping), and let the consumer decide which brand will he buy (Note: It is important to note that in some cases, though a consumer may covet a brand highly e.g. BMW, but might not intend buying it due to many reasons. So we specifically framed question to analyse the purchase intention), and the attributes for which he will go for that particular brand. It was surprising to find the changing perception of the consumer towards TATA, especially after it being the proud owner of Jaguar and LR on one hand, and the maker of the worlds smallest, and economical (& affordable) car Nano on the other. There were many more surprising results as well, have a look… . .

The Result (Survey Dated 8th Decemper, 2009)

A Chrysler segue ladeira abaixo.

Vaughn Gittin Jr's 2010 Formula Drift Mustang

I’m one of a number of people who just doesn’t quite get the ‘10 Mustang. It’s not that it’s awful, it’s just that I like the ‘05-’09 better. Well, this year’s SEMA show, with all its awesome ‘10 Mustang builds, has done a lot to help the new car grow on me–and it certainly doesn’t hurt the cause to see one tricked out as a badass drift car. According to the guys at the Falken booth, Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s Mustang is the only 2010 currently in Formula D, and the car is expected to run a full season next year. Under the hood is a Whipple-supercharged 4.6L Aluminator v8 by Ford Racing, putting out 680 hp and 650 lb-ft torque, mated to the same 4-speed gearbox they run in their NASCAR program. I’m thinking that Hankook Camaro had better watch out! See more pics below the jump.

Mustang Kelly

Kelly and I would like to welcome the newest member of our family. Her father’s old, our new 1965 Mustang Convertible. Poppy red (orange) in color, with a black rag top and all black interior. 1965 was the first year of the convertible mustangs, and 1/2 a year away from the first mustangs ever made. Ron will be driving it over on Sunday, to it’s happy little new home in our backyard garage.

The car ‘Musty’ does need a bit of work, but it is running and drivable. I want to take a look at the brakes, and the underneath of the car right away, and would love to have it in tip top shape by the time spring rolls around. It’s not like we’ll be driving it much, but I would love to fully restore it to original condition. I can’t wait to have a bit of a closer look to see what it all is going to need.

Between the car and the basement, this is shaping up to be a very expensive winter…

This 1965 mustang could be ‘Musty’s’ twin, just in a bit better shape I think. Also has the original ’spinner’ hub caps. I’ll like to get those back on it as well, but they’re rather pricey now… a trend with everything we’ll need for the car I fear.

Ford vai lançar cintos infláveis para o banco traseiro

Auto Estrada

Classic Design Concepts Claims First 2010 Mustang Shaker Hoodscoop

…Yeah, they’ve also got a Challenger widebody kit that extends the front fenders 3″  on either side, and parts that’ll dress up your plain-jane C6 Corvette as either a Z06 or a ZR1. And can you name any other booth at SEMA that has a new Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, and Corvette? Talk about covering all your bases. More pics below the jump!

Rolling Bones Drove Here From New York

Keith Cornell and Ken Schmidt’s ‘32 Three-Window Coupe struck a nice contrast to SEMA’s scads of glittery show cars, looking spare and mean in the Motorbooks booth with its oil-leak-smelling Y-block and highway crud still clinging to the chassis. Incredibly, the guys actually drove the ‘32 here from New York, setting out for SEMA on October 26th and even managing to score a speeding ticket along the way. When you look into this ride’s Mexican-blanket interior and check out the wiperless windshield, minimalist dash, and louvers-and-chicken-wire ceiling treatment, it’s hard not to consider how much we take our modern cars’ creature comforts for granted. Rolling Bones certainly gets the distance award for their burly roadtrip, and extra points for running a SEMA show car in the weather on the open road, just as it should be. More pics below the jump, and check out blogs of Rolling Bones’ cross-country adventure at the Motorbooks RideHub page.

Un Ford Mustang de groaza

Ford Mustang modificat

Its Playboy Barbie's New Minivan!

ooo playboy license plate..2 guess's who drives this nippy number?!

This bubblegum pink car with a mouth like a sad guppy fish made me automatically think …ok so the Ka has some balls. I’m not a fan of the tackily made modified cars – especially when it’s a bad car underneath all the slap, however this Ka is cute, it looks very daring yet still remains curvaceous and delicate.

The new model Ka model has very teasing eyes and flashes an appeasing smile. Compared to that of the modified new Ford Ka in Speke, seen in and around the whole of Scotland, this car will definitely turn heads.

Just for the record. I would never drive it (but that’s because I’m not an 18 anymore), maybe i just like it because of the colour and the fact they’ve modified a Ka… although spoke to soon… just saw the playboy license plate. Hmmm! I try not to stereotype, but pink – playboy – modified car spells Barbie tart girl-racer to me.

A talented hatch!

New Set of Wheels

We traded in our 2004 Ford Explorer with a bum transmission and 120000 miles on it for and brand new Toyota Corolla with 4 miles on it. YAY! I am excited to zip around in this tiny car that gets more than 19 miles per gallon and is not on the verge of breaking down all the time. YAY! And it’s a pretty color called Blue Streak. We are in the market for super awesome car names now. Tom’s old Celica was called The Phantom Menace. My old Dodge Dynasty was called Betsy. I think we’re looking for something a little more on the badass side, not the old lady side, for this one. Any suggestions?
