GM Throws Down The Gauntlet, Challenges Ford To 'Truck Of War'

GM’s vice chairman, Tom Stephens, appears to be taking a page out of Bob Lutz’s playbook. Today he issued a challenge to Ford to pit the PowerStroke diesel-powered 2011 F-Series Super Duty truck against the DuraMax diesel 2011 Chevrolet and GMC Heavy Duty trucks. The new line of 2011 GM Heavy Duty trucks is due to make its debut at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show next month.

The challenge, issued via PickupTrucks.com, is straightforward enough. Stephens said, “I want to take our truck and Ford’s and chain them together back-to-back. Then I want to have them pull against each other. I know our truck will beat theirs.” A tug-of-war game played with trucks: the Truck of War.

Smacking of Bob Lutz’s CTS-V Challenge, the aim of the challenge is clear: to pit GM’s best against the perceived market leader to show in no uncertain terms that they have a winning product. It’s not yet clear if Ford will take up the challenge, but it’s clear that Stephens is serious about it, confirming three times that he wants to see it happen. Notably absent from the challenge, however, is the Ram Heavy Duty.
